Imagine a world where everybody had a superpower. Some people would be able to become invisible, just like Sue Storm, thanks to invisibility cloaks, others might own impenetrability suits which are as strong as the skin of Colossus, while some people might even fly to work with their very own Iron Man suit. Such a world sounds like a daydream. However nothing could be further from the truth. In reality this superpower world could be your future world.

At Campus Party, Barry Fitzgerald will take you on a journey through the real science and the current scientific research that could create some of the superhero superpowers in the future. Barry will speak about the Secrets of Superhero Science at Campus Party on the Science Stage on Friday 27th May from 13.00 – 14.00. During his talk, he will delve into the genetic secrets of the X-Men, reveal the science behind creating an invisibility cloak and discuss the prospect of building Spider-Man’s web slingers. You’ll also hear about accountability issues and governmental laws that must be introduced when superpowers enter our daily lives.


Barry W. Fitzgerald was born in Limerick, Ireland on October 30th 1979, almost a year after the release of Superman. His interest in science was sparked at secondary school when he attended Crescent College Comprehensive in Limerick. After graduating with a degree in Applied Physics from the University of Limerick, he obtained a PhD in Computational Physics from the same university. Upon completion of his PhD, he worked as a Project Officer in Teaching and Learning in the NCE-MSTL at UL. In February 2012, he moved to the Netherlands to join the Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Twente, Enschede as a postdoctoral researcher. In October 2014, he moved to the Eindhoven University of Technology where he currently works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Multi-Scale Modelling of Multi-Phase Flows Group. In his spare time, Barry runs marathons, watches football, and plays guitar and sings in a band.
